BNI Pitch

FSBO At The Oscars

Slide #9 - For Sale By Owner: Not a good idea on your own, but maybe if you have a coach to guide you.

This post is about one of my 45-second pitches at my BNI Chapter, BNI City Business. You can read the introduction to this collection here.

Another self-created image, derived from the old Frisbee joke1. This was a few weeks after the 2022 Oscars. I started with the general idea with this image in mind, and then fit it to the FSBO message – probably because of the homonymous nature of FSBO (pronounced Fizbo) and Frisbee.

FSBO – For Sale By Owner – is not a term widely used in New Zealand, and is a rare model to use when selling your home. It is generally also uncommon when selling your business, except where you receive an unsolicited offer (and even then is not referred to as FSBO).

Can I Sell My Own Business?

This gave me the opportunity to talk about an uncommon offering of mine – acting as a FSBO coach to business owners. My normal advice to business owners is to use a business broker to sell their business. There is, however, a cohort of owners of small businesses (e.g., under about NZ$120,000) for whom the typical brokerage fee can be too high as a proportion of the sale amount. For these business owners, I offer a service to coach them through the process. They do the heavy lifting, I keep them on target.

1In case you haven’t heard it: I was wondering, why does that Frisbee appear to be getting larger?… then it hit me.
