BNI Pitch

Fairness

Slide #16 - On the fairness of the universe and Exit Planning. Your business isn't worth what you need it to be worth to retire. It is worth what the market will pay: Fair Market Value.

This post is about one of my 45-second pitches at my BNI Chapter, BNI City Business. You can read the introduction to this collection here.

I also ended up bumping my planned slide due to a client discussion this week. My client was quite despondent that their business wasn’t worth what they needed it to be worth. “It’s not fair!” she exclaimed. Which took me to this quote/meme.

Fairness has nothing to do with it. Your business is worth what it is worth. If that’s not enough to retire, it is not the buyer being unfair. Or even the universe being unfair. You have failed to do what you needed to do to build a business that could fund your retirement. No one is going to overpay to buy your business just to be nice to you.
