This post is about my final 45-second pitch at my BNI chapter, BNI City Business in New Zealand. You can read the introduction to this collection here.
22 March 2024. After 4 years, my final meeting as a member of BNI City Business. I went for cheap laughs, following on from last week’s ‘Name This Song’ puzzle. I started with a blank page. I asked members not to call out the name of the song, but to raise their hands if they thought they knew the song name.
“Another song challenge. Another ’80s banger (and serious earworm). Released in 1982, it hit number one globally, including in the UK, US, Australia, and New Zealand. It knocked Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” out of the number one position on the US charts. It was voted number three in VH1’s “100 Greatest One Hit Wonders” of all time.”
I then progressed the slide build to add the picture above. “Anyone know who this is?” No one. I explained later in the meeting that it was Johnnie Ray, a 50s crooner and heartthrob.
I blanked the screen again, and asked, “Hands up if I haven’t offended you with any of my slides.” A few hands went up.
“Ok, name this song.”

A great final meeting to cap off my membership.
